If you have a computer with Windows 10 May 2020 Update or 2004, it is time to update the operating system and move to a newer release. As of today, Windows 10 2004 is officially dead.
Microsoft released Windows 10 "May 2020 Update" on May 27, 2020. This version was the last to come with many new features, such as improvements for virtual desktops, WSL 2, cloud-based system reset, better notifications, better search, updated Xbox Game Bar, Bluetooth Quick Pair, etc. The following feature updates for Windows 10 were simply “enablement packages” with little to no new capabilities for regular consumers.
As a spring release, Windows 10 2004 received full 18 months of active support with security and bug fix updates. Autumn releases, such as Windows 10 20H2 or 21H2, get 36 months of support.
It will be interesting to see how Microsoft will continue updating Windows 10 with version 2004 out of the window. 2004, 20H2, 21H1, and 21H2 are technically one Windows build with different “enablement packages” that turn on various minor features.
According to the latest available data from Adduplex, approximately 11% of all Windows users remain on Windows 10 2004. Microsoft usually force-update regular consumers to more recent releases as a Windows 10 version approaches its end of life. You can assume Windows 10 2004 will lose even more users in the upcoming months.
Microsoft now supports the following Windows version: Windows 11 21H2 (initial release), Windows 10 21H2, Windows 10 21H1, and Windows 10 20H2. Microsoft plans to cease supporting the latter on May 10, 2022.
