Edge Legacy
Microsoft Edge Legacy is the EdgeHTML based browser that is currently the default browser on Windows 10 PCs. The new Microsoft Edge is based on Chromium. It is now bundled with Windows 10, and is recommended by Microsoft to be used as the default web browser in the OS.
The Chromium-based app had reached the Stable branch earlier this year. Besides Windows 10, it is also available for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. There is also a version for Mac OS X, Android, and an upcoming Linux version.
Microsoft will discontinue Microsoft Edge Legacy in all Windows 10 versions on March 9, 2021. After March 9, 2021, the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app will not receive new security updates.
Internet Explorer 11
Microsoft has also announced that it will phase out support for Internet Explorer 11 on Microsoft 365 over the next year.
- Beginning November 30, 2020, the Microsoft Teams web app will no longer support IE 11.
- Beginning August 17, 2021, the remaining Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support IE 11.
This means that after the above dates, customers will have a degraded experience or will be unable to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services on IE 11. For degraded experiences, new Microsoft 365 features will not be available or certain features may cease to work when accessing the app or service via IE 11. Microsoft is suggesting customers to go with the new Edge app.
