Microsoft Edge received new Password Monitor health dashboard and other improvements

Microsoft continues working on improving the built-in password manager in the Edge browser. In the latest Canary builds of Microsoft Edge, the company added new features to enhance the usability and security of your passwords. According to the Microsoft Edge roadmap, those changes will become available once the company releases version 91.

Beginning in Microsoft Edge v.91, we will give feedback to you on which of your passwords are weak and/or reused across accounts. This will allow you to stay informed about your security on the web.

For now, users can try new improvements to the password manager in preview channels, as Microsoft is already rolling them out to some Edge Insiders. Here what is new.

Password health dashboard

With Edge 91, the browser from Microsoft will get a new password health dashboard feature. It will scan your passwords for leaks or reuse and show the results as simple graphs.

Besides, Microsoft Edge will get new password sorting options. Users will be able to sort passwords alphabetically or by health (from weakest to strongest and vice-versa) and display only leaked, weak, or reused passwords. Sorting will help users to hide healthy passwords from the list to focus on those that require immediate attention. Finally, the browser will show a summary with counters for all passwords, reused passwords, and leaked passwords.

Microsoft is currently rolling out the new password manager to a select group of Insiders in the Canary channel. You can expect it to arrive for more users in Canary and Dev in the coming weeks. Edge 91, mentioned in the official roadmap, is due to release next week, but we doubt the new features will make their path to the Stable channel that fast. It will probably take Microsoft a few more weeks before expanding the testing scope, not to mention shipping the new feature to the public.

In case you missed it, Google is also preparing several password improvements for its browser. During its annual developer conference, Google announced a new capability for Chrome that will automatically change leaked passwords for users on supported websites. Automatic password change is currently rolling out in the US for Android users.
