AI APIs and Phi-4-mini Model
Microsoft Edge introduces new AI APIs designed to simplify the integration of artificial intelligence into web applications. Powered by the compact yet powerful Phi-4-mini model, these APIs allow developers to incorporate AI functionality directly into websites and browser extensions.
The Prompt API facilitates interactions with the AI model, while Writing Assistance APIs support text generation, summarization, and editing. A Translator API for text translation is also set to join this suite in the near future. Available in the Edge Canary and Dev channels
PDF Translation
To address challenges posed by language barriers in global work environments, Microsoft Edge now features a PDF translation tool. This functionality allows users to translate entire PDF documents into their preferred language with just a few clicks. By preserving the original document's structure and context, the feature eliminates the need for cumbersome line-by-line translations.
PDF translation is currently available in the Canary channel and will soon be rolled out broadly.
Automating Tasks with Copilot Chat in Edge for Business
Edge for Business introduces Copilot Chat, a tool designed to automate repetitive tasks and enhance workplace efficiency. Through agents like the Sales Assistant Agent, users can generate leads, track customer interactions, and gain actionable insights—all without leaving their workflow.
Additionally, Copilot Chat now includes a preview feature that summarizes Microsoft 365 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, helping professionals quickly digest complex information and maintain productivity.
Free Content Filtering
For educational institutions and small businesses, Edge for Business offers free web content filtering to block inappropriate sites. Administrators can configure filters through the Microsoft 365 admin center, selecting categories to restrict access to millions of potentially harmful websites.
This feature operates independently of network connectivity, ensuring consistent protection even when devices are offline.
It is available for managed Windows devices running Windows 10 or later, requiring Microsoft 365 Education or Business Premium licenses alongside Intune.
Strengthening Data Protection for BYOD and AI
In response to the growing adoption of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies, Edge for Business integrates native data protection measures. New controls prevent sensitive corporate data from being shared with consumer AI applications such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. Real-time auditing and blocking of sensitive inputs ensure compliance and mitigate risks associated with AI usage. These capabilities extend Purview data security controls to unmanaged Windows and macOS devices, offering a secure browsing experience across personal and professional contexts.
Bridging Security Gaps with the Edge for Business Connector Framework
Recognizing the browser’s role as a gateway to company resources, Microsoft has introduced the Edge for Business security connector framework. This framework enables seamless integration of authentication, data loss prevention, and reporting solutions into the browser. By partnering with a trusted ecosystem of providers, Edge for Business ensures comprehensive security coverage without additional costs or disruptions to existing infrastructures.
