Microsoft Edge for Android is getting extension support

Shortly after Firefox, Edge mobile is getting support for extensions. Microsoft is already testing the new capabilities with a small select group of users.

Extension support on Android is something that mainstream browser makers are avoiding for years. Google Chrome and all major products built on its base do not offer extensions on any existing mobile platform. This actually looks like an intentional move, because much smaller software makers offer this option in their Chrome-based products. There are several of them on the Google Play.

The same story was about Firefox, but the latter has recently changed. Mozilla has added extension support in Firefox for Android, and launched a Store for it.

Extension support in Microsoft Edge on Android

Microsoft now follows the suit, and has implemented the extension support in the Edge browser for Android. Currently, only a limited set of add-on are available for testing:

  • uBlock origin,
  • Dark reader,
  • and Global speed.

To test is right now, one needs to enable a flag called "Edge extensions" on the experiments flag (edge://flags). By enabling the feature, users will find  a new "extensions" section placed in the overflow menu of Edge.

It is not clear if Google plans to make a similar change in the Chrome, but the direction is set. As Microsoft Edge and Chrome share the Chromium base, Microsoft's endeavors in bringing extensions to mobile devices may drastically change the situation on the market.
