What's new in Microsoft Edge 138
One notable change introduces the ability to use the primary work profile - typically signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID - as the default profile for opening external links , improving consistency for enterprise users. This behavior can be managed by administrators using the EdgeOpenExternalLinksWithPrimaryWorkProfileEnabled
policy.
A new toggle under Autofill settings allows users to opt in to the collection of web form field labels (such as Name or Email) to improve autofill accuracy. The feature respects existing policies and stores collected data securely on-device.
Edge now supports AI-powered browsing history search , enabling users to find previously visited pages using natural language, synonyms, or even misspellings. The AI model runs locally, ensuring all data remains private and never leaves the device.
Additional updates
- Copilot integration on the New Tab Page , offering productivity suggestions and chat-based query support.
- A new Chat Summarization feature available in the context menu for Microsoft 365 Copilot subscribers.
- Enhanced performance notifications that help identify and resolve browser slowdowns.
- Support for viewing sensitivity labels on protected PDFs in the built-in PDF viewer, aiding compliance and document handling for enterprise users.
All features are being deployed gradually through controlled rollout , and may not yet appear for all users. Administrators can manage availability via Edge policies to align with organizational needs.
Changes in detail
- Use primary work profile as the default profile for opening external links. Microsoft Edge currently opens external links by default in the last used profile. However, for enterprise users, the primary work profile (signed in with Microsoft Entra ID to enroll the device) is usually the best choice for opening external links. With this feature, on Windows, Edge will check for a primary work profile and, if available, make it the default profile for opening external links. On Mac and Linux, if only one work profile is found that is signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID account, it will be considered the primary work profile. Administrators can control the availability of this feature with the EdgeOpenExternalLinksWithPrimaryWorkProfileEnabled policy.
The feature is being rolled out in stages (controlled rollout), so it may not be available to all users. - New configuration for personal information autofill settings. A toggle has been added to the Autofill settings (edge://settings/autofill/personalInfo) to consent to the collection of data from web form fields. This feature allows Microsoft Edge users to consent to the collection of web form field labels (e.g., Name, Email) to improve the accuracy of autofill suggestions. Only the field labels are collected, not the data entered by the user. Web form field labels are stored securely in accordance with Microsoft privacy standards.
The setting is managed through existing autofill policies (e.g., AutofillAddressEnabled , EdgeAutofillMlEnabled ). The AutofillAddressEnabled policy is the parent of EdgeAutofillMlEnabled. The EdgeAutofillMlEnabled policy is the parent of this new setting, so disabling it will also disable this feature.
The feature is being rolled out in stages (controlled rollout), so it may not be available to all users. - AI-powered search of your browsing history. Improved search can find sites in your browsing history, even if you use a synonym, a different phrase, or make a typo. After you turn on this feature, sites you've visited will appear in the results of improved search of your browsing history. The model is trained on your data, locally on your device. This data never leaves your device or is sent to Microsoft. Administrators can control the availability of this feature using the EdgeHistoryAISearchEnabled policy.
This feature is being rolled out in stages (controlled rollout), so it may not be available to everyone. - Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat Summarization in the context menu of Microsoft Edge. This menu item will give you a quick summary of the page you are viewing and will allow you to ask questions about it.
The feature is being rolled out in stages (controlled rollout), so it may not be available to all users yet. - Improved performance notifications We've improved how we communicate performance to users and how to improve it. Notifications from Performance Detector and extensions may appear in Settings & more when Edge is slowing down.
This feature is being rolled out in stages (controlled rollout), so it may not be available to all users. - Copilot on the new tab page in Microsoft Edge. Since late May, Microsoft Edge users may have noticed productivity-related suggestions from Copilot next to the search box on the new tab page. You may also see a Copilot icon in the search box, which, when clicked, will send your search query to a Copilot chat. The NewTabPageBingChatEnabled policy still applies. Changes to the new tab page are rolling out to Microsoft Edge across all channels.
The feature is being rolled out in stages (controlled rollout), so it may not be available to all users. - Added support for viewing sensitivity labels applied to PDFs protected with Microsoft Information Protection. Enterprise customers can now view the sensitivity labels applied to MIP-protected PDFs to stay informed about data classification and properly handle these sensitive documents. This change is available in the new built-in PDF viewer in Microsoft Edge.
The feature is rolling out in stages (controlled rollout), so it may not be available to all users.
