With release of Edge Dev 110.0.1543.0, Microsoft announced that they drop support for legacy operating system in the Edge 110 version. Those include Windows 8.1, Windows 8 and Windows 7.
The OSes will reach their end of support in early 2023. So, the current Dev Channel build of Edge only runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It change log includes the following line:
Starting with Chromium 110, Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 will no longer be supported (Sunsetting support for Windows 7 / 8/8.1 in early 2023 - Google Chrome Community)
Actually, it not Microsoft but the underlying Chromium project that ends support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. This means that most Chromium-based browsers headed by Google Chrome will no longer work work on these legacy systems.
Speaking about Google Chrome, it already shows notifications about the upcoming events that include recommendations to upgrade the OS to at least Windows 10. Thought there is a Registry option to suppress those notifications.
Users who can't or don't want to install Windows 10/11 can switch to Firefox. Mozilla considers to keep Firefox available until August 2023 via the ESR channel. However the company has not yet made a decision on the exact timing for killing Firefox on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.
