Microsoft drops support for many email apps in its Outlook for web

Microsoft no longer supports basic authentication for the Outlook email service. So email apps that can only work with a username and password via IMAP and POP3 aren't supported any more. The OAuth 2.0 tokens are the only method supported for apps. This affects a galore of software, including Microsoft's own Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016 MSI, Outlook 2019 LTSC - all these versions are now obsolete.

To use Outlook email in MS Office Outlook, you need Outlook 2021 or higher.

Last week, Microsoft issued a final warning to users to transition to the new authentication method. The company stated that users who fail to make the switch will lose access to certain third-party mail and calendar apps. Users are advised to switch to an application that supports “modern authentication,”. Besides Microsoft's recent Outlook versions, the company suggests the latest versions of Apple Mail and Thunderbird as alternatives.

Changing the authentication method shouldn't be a big deal for users with modern app versions. But it raises a real trouble for those you stick with some legacy devices and software. For those, the web interface of the Outlook.com website will remain the only way to check for new emails.
