In late 2024, Microsoft was testing a redesigned, simplified system tray in Windows 11 Insider builds. The update changed the date and time section of the taskbar by removing the AM/PM designation and the current year display. The updated layout retained only the time, date, and month. Additionally, the notification bell icon was set to change appearance based on the Do Not Disturb status.
However, in early 2025, Microsoft paused the rollout, stating the need to address several technical and design issues. At the time, many assumed the change was temporary and would return in a refined form in future builds.

Recent statements from Windows Insider Senior Program Manager Brandon LeBlanc on the social platform X show a different situation. He confirmed the company has no plans to restore the simplified system tray. That happens due to negative user feedback.
This clearly shows that not everyone welcomes a dumbed down user interface. Microsoft has not disclosed the specific concerns users raised, nor has it commented on the possibility of revising the new tray idea in the future. But most users are against such changes. The simplified tray is not convenient when the current time is your important value and resource.
Finally, it is worth noting that the abbreviated date and time look in the taskbar was completely optional. Microsoft made an option in Settings that enables the full date & time.
