Microsoft discontinues HoloLens 2

Almost a year after the original Hololens was discontinued in December 2024, Microsoft is leaving HoloLens 2 alone in the dark. HoloLens 2 headsets are being discontinued but will continue to receive security and bug fixes until 2027. HoloLens 2 was officially announced on February 24, 2019, at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona.

HoloLens has found applications in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, medicine, and education. The U.S. Army is also testing HoloLens-based Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) headsets.

The company appears to have lost faith in the virtual reality market. The Hololens 3 product was cancelled prior its announcement. Also, Microsoft fired employees involved into virtual reality, mixed reality, and the HoloLens division.

HoloLens 2 runs a special version of Windows 10 Holographic on a Snapdragon 850 processor. It features improved ergonomics, a significant increase in viewing angle (from 34° to 52° diagonally) and resolution (from 720p to 2K), as well as full support for gesture tracking, allowing you to interact with holograms in real time, move them, and change their size. Now it has become part of the long list of the products discontinued by Microsoft.
