Microsoft is reportedly focusing in single screen devices with Windows 10X. The Redmond software giant has delayed the launch of Surface Neo, so it won't become available on Holiday 2020.
Microsoft is now prioritizing Windows 10X for single-screen devices, leaving dual-screen and foldable devices for the future. Due to this change, the company’s Windows 10X device, Surface Neo, may no longer be launched on Holiday 2020 as originally planned.
Surface Neo is Microsoft's very own foldable PC, which comes with a detachable keyboard, Surface Slim Pen inking. It will feature two 9” screens connected by a 360° hinge.
Windows 10X supports classic Win32 (desktop) apps via containerization, where every Win32 app will run in the same container. Most of the Win32 apps are supported by that container with a few limitations, such as a missing notification area (system tray).
The news comes just weeks after Surface lead Panos Panay took his position of the Windows team at Microsoft. Microsoft now is about to bring Windows 10X to existing single-screen devices first, and to get extra time polish virtualization features used for classic Win32 apps running on Windows 10X. The feature is still in development, and requires a number of improvements to compatibility and performance.
The change in plans means that the Surface Neo dual-screen device with Windows 10X pre-installed is no longer set for a 2020 launch. However, the Android-powered dual-screen phone Surface Duo is still expected to be released later this year.
Well, the good news is that with Microsoft now focusing on single-screen devices, we should get a preview of Windows 10X for existing devices soon and try out all its features and user interface changes.
