For an average consumer, built-in Windows Defender in Windows 10 and 11 is more than enough to protect from online threats and all sorts of malware. With increased focus on security in Windows 11, Microsoft now wants to up the game and provide users with a better solution to monitor the safety of all devices within a home network. A store listing for the new Microsoft Defender spilled the beans and revealed some of the upcoming features.
According to the store description, Microsoft Defender Preview for Windows will allow users to track the security of Windows and other connected devices, such as Macbooks, iPhones, and Android smartphones.
"Microsoft Defender is a security application that gives you peace of mind. Through our personalized dashboard, you can view the security posture of your Windows device and other connected devices (Mac, iOS, and Android) all in one place."
Bleeping Computer also reports the software will include antivirus, phishing protection, password breach protection, identity theft monitoring, security recommendations, and other advanced features found in many premium AV solutions.
Ahmed Walid managed to patch the application and bypass authentication to access the app and see how it works.
Microsoft wants to position the new Defender as a central security monitoring hub that allows devices in your home network to communicate with each other and report security threats. Users will be able to add family members and their devices using email invitations or QR codes.
There is no official information about when Microsoft plans to launch the new Defender for Windows 11 and 10. You can safely assume Microsoft will conduct public tests with help from Windows Insiders before launching the software for the general public.
