Microsoft has confirmed a performance issue affecting NDI (Network Device Interface) streaming following the release of the August 2025 Windows Patch Tuesday update (KB5063878, OS Build 26100.4946). The affected platforms are Windows 11, version 24H2, and Windows 10, versions 22H2 and 21H2. Server platforms are not affected by this issue. NDI is used by broadcasting apps like OBS, and now gives issue to streamers across various platforms.
NDI is a royalty-free protocol developed by NewTek that enables the transmission of high-quality, low-latency video and audio over standard IP networks. It allows devices and software applications to identify and communicate with one another on a local network, facilitating real-time exchange of video feeds without requiring dedicated hardware. NDI supports multiple streams, bidirectional communication, and metadata transmission, including alpha channels and timecode. It is commonly used in live production environments such as broadcast studios, corporate events, houses of worship, and remote collaboration setups.

OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is a free and open-source application for video recording and live streaming. It supports real-time capture, mixing, encoding, and broadcasting of video sources from cameras, desktop screens, and media files. OBS integrates with various streaming platforms and supports plugins and external inputs, including NDI. Users actively use OBS to produce professional-grade streams for platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, and enterprise content delivery systems.
After installing the August 2025 update, users may experience severe stuttering, lag, and disrupted audio or video during NDI-based streaming or media transfer between computers. The issue occurs primarily when "Display Capture" is enabled on the source machine and affects applications such as OBS and NDI Tools. The problem persists even under low network load, indicating a local system-level impact.
To mitigate the issue, NDI recommends manually configuring the NDI Receive Mode to use TCP or UDP instead of the default RUDP (Reliable UDP). Instructions for this adjustment are available on the NDI support site under "Traffic Drops After Windows Update."
Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide further updates as they become available.
