Microsoft Addresses Long-Standing “Update and Shut Down” Bug in Windows 11

Microsoft is currently testing a fix in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview builds for both the Dev and Beta Channels. The update targets a persistent issue with the "Update and Shut Down" feature that has frustrated users for over two years.

For many Windows 11 users, selecting "Update and Shut Down" did not result in the expected shutdown. Instead, the system often rebooted and returned to the lock screen or desktop after installing updates. The behavior remained inconsistent, working correctly for some users at times while failing repeatedly for others.

Official Confirmation and Changelog Entry

Microsoft has confirmed the presence of the fix in recent preview builds. The official changelog notes that Microsoft has fixed an underlying issue which could lead 'Update and shutdown' to not actually shut down your PC after.

The fix is expected to reach all Windows 11 users in the coming weeks through a monthly cumulative update. This resolution addresses a key usability concern for users who rely on the "Update and Shut Down" option to complete pending updates without waiting for a manual shutdown afterward.
