“Microslop” Sparks Backlash as Microsoft’s AI Push Draws Criticism

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has launched a new personal blog, "sn scratchpad," where he plans to share his thoughts on the future of technology. As expected, the first post is dedicated to artificial intelligence, although Microsoft's progress in this area doesn't look impressive.

Nadella believes the industry needs to develop a new approach to artificial intelligence, building on Steve Jobs's concept of a computer as a "bicycle for the mind." He calls modern AI tools "cognitive amplifiers" and argues that it's time to shift the focus from the power of individual models to how people use these systems to truly impact the world.

In recent months, Microsoft has been actively trying to migrate users from their familiar Office and Windows programs to AI agents. The company believes that everyone will be able to use voice-controlled Copilot to create content, search for information, and gain new knowledge. However, this vision is currently unfulfilled. Many of Copilot's promised features are either inconsistent or not working at all.

In his post, Satya Nadella also called for an end to the debate about "AI slop" and technological sophistication. But this only added fuel to the fire. Users interpreted this statement as Microsoft's unwillingness to acknowledge the problem of internet pollution caused by generated garbage.

The "Microslop" hashtag

But things didn't stop there. The hashtag "Microslop" quickly trended on X (formerly Twitter), a combination of the company name Microsoft and the word "slop," which refers to low-quality AI content. Users are massively criticizing the company's aggressive policy of implementing GPT and Copilot in almost all its products.

Clearly, the public reaction was completely opposite to Satya Nadella's expectations. Regardless, Microsoft continues to chase hype, and it seems they have no intention of stopping.

  1. My experience, both in my family and at my job, is that Windows users desire a stable, reliable, trusted experience.

Non-power users will already get confused when you switch a few desktop icons.

They certainly don’t want to use an evolving OS, which only allows you to install security updates if you accept that new, unwanted and confusing features are getting forced on you.

Their system isn’t a toy, it’s a tool, and they don’t want someone to mess with it in the same way no one wants their shower “improved” with confusing tools and options. It should just work.

As an administrator, I prize continuity and stability above everything else.

This is all especially true if it poses threats to performance, stability and privacy.

If they had just focused on improving Windows 10 with support for newer hardware etc, it would be a great OS. But even the change to 11 was just caused by a desire to ape Apple; and that suggests these people do not even use their own products but macOS.
