After a short delay, both, Linux Mint 17.3 XFCE edition and the corresponding KDE based branch have left the beta stage and are now available along with MATE and Cinnamon editions. XFCE is known as a lightweight yet powerful alternative to the MATE desktop environment. KDE offers a rich desktop experience for the end user providing a wide range of features and customization options.
Both editions feature the trademark Mint appearance.
XFCE and KDE editions include all the features which were introduced in Mint 17.3.
- XFCE 4.12
- KDE 4.14, which can be a good alternative for those who don't like Plasma 5.
- Support for window managers now includes Marco, Metacity, Xfwm4 and the lightweight Openbox. You can switch between them on-the-fly. Two new commands, wm-detect and wm-recovery, provide the ability to show information about the current window manager and to restore the previously used one respectively.
- Composition can be enabled using Compiz and Compton software. The appropriate options were added to the configuration app.
- Software Sources can detect and suggest the fastest mirror for packages, reliability and the update status of repositories, compatibility of PPA repositories and many other improvements.
- Driver Manager now works much faster, highlights free/open drivers.
- LibreOffice 5.0
- Linux kernel 4.2.0
What's new in Linux Mint 17.3: XFCE edition | KDE edition
This is definitely good news for those who prefer these alternative desktop environments over the default MATE and Cinnamon environments.
