Today, Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" was announced. This release appears to be the last point release of version 17. For existing Mint 17.x users, the upgrade process should be smooth and quick. Besides security and stability fixes, "Rosa" brings some new features to the user interface.
The "Desktop Settings" app, which is an exclusive Mint tool to manage the appearance and behavior of the user workspace, got updated. Now it features a new one-click ability to change the window manager/compositing manager. This feature is available for MATE and Xfce desktop environments.
A new help section was added to explain various concepts around window managers and compositing.
In case you are interested in knowing why the name "Rosa" was picked for this release, it is because Rosa is a classic vintage Italian, Spanish and Portuguese name.
Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" will be the last 17.x update. The release after 17.3 will be version 18 and based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. 17.x releases are then supported until 2019 for bug fixes and security fixes. After 17.3, most major changes will be targeted for 18.x. For example, Cinnamon 2.8 is planned for Mint 17.3, whereas Cinnamon 3.0 is planned for Mint 18. Source: Linux Mint.
