The latest Canary build of Microsoft Edge Chromium includes reworked tab tooltips known as 'Tab Hover Cards'. Starting in build 78.0.253.0 the browser displays the tab tooltips using the new style by default.
This is how the tab tooltips look in the current Dev version of Microsoft Edge:
In the latest Canary build the tooltips have a new appearance.
The feature is directly inherited from Google Chrome. It can be disabled and enabled with a flag.
To Disable Tab Hover Cards in Microsoft Edge,
- Update your Microsoft Edge to the latest version (see below). Build 78.0.253.0 and above is required.
- Enter
edge://flags/#tab-hover-cards
into the address bar and press the Enter key. - Set the Tab Hover Cards flag to Disabled.
- Restart the browser once prompted.
You are done.
Instead of disabling the Tab Hover Cards completely, you can play with the flag and try to set it to
- Enabled
- Enabled B
- Enabled C
As of this writing, the options do not change the appearance of tab tooltips. Instead they add the fade-in animation effect to a tooltip. This may change in the future.
As you may already know, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. The stable channel is also on its way to users.

I still hate Tab Hover Cards. They don’t show the full title. That’s the whole point of a tooltip. I do not really care about the thumbnail. Especially in a desktop browser.
