Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 users in the European Economic Area (EEA) will continue to receive free security updates until October 14, 2026, without any strings attached. This means that users in these countries will not need to sync their PC settings with the cloud to continue OS support.
The policy change came in response to pressure from consumer advocacy groups like Euroconsumers. They challenged Microsoft's initial terms, arguing that the requirement to use the company's cloud services to access updates was unfair and violated the Digital Markets Act, as it provided Microsoft with financial benefits.
So in the European Economic Area, Microsoft is making changes to the registration process to align with local requirements and ensure security and convenience. The company stated that their goal is to support customers and provide them with a variety of options for migrating to Windows 11, including maintaining uninterrupted access to critical security updates.
For users outside the European Economic Area, including the CIS countries, the conditions appear to remain the same:
Ways to obtain a Windows 10 ESU license
- One-time payment of $30.
- Purchase for 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
- Free when you sync your system settings with your Microsoft account using Windows Backup.
