Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge use lots of shared code thanks to the underlying Chromium project, but the latter offers more exciting and unique features. The Immersive Reader is one of the tools that set Edge apart from the mainstream competition. It allows users to customize the reading experience and make it more accessible. Microsoft continually improves Immersive Reader and adds new capabilities. Besides, it actively enhances compatibility with different websites. Wikipedia is the latest such addition.
Now, you can read more than 55 million Wikipedia articles in Immersive Reader. To enable this mode, click the book and speaker button in the address bar.
With Immersive Reader enabled, you can customize the reading experience by changing the font, font size, spacing, background color, etc. Also, you can browse a table of contents and quickly jump to a different section of the article. If a page contains a table, Microsoft Edge will collapse it by default to keep only its first rows. Users can display a full table by clicking the “Show more button.”
The updated Immersive Reader is now available in all Microsoft Edge channels. Microsoft is currently rolling out this feature, so it may take a while before it reaches all users. You can check whether Microsoft Edge received Wikipedia support for Immersive Reader by opening the website and checking the address bar’s right side.
You can learn more about the latest improvements to Immersive Reader on the Tech Community forum. You can also read about the recent changes in Edge 89, such as Vertical Tabs, Sleeping Tabs, startup boost, and others. All these features are now available globally, with more to come.
Do note that Microsoft is ending Edge Legacy support today, so be sure to move to the newest Edge Chromium. Decoupling the browser from Windows 10 and switching to Chromium significantly increased development speed. Also, it opened the door for Edge to different platforms. Nowadays, the modern Microsoft Edge browser is available on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, macOS, and even Linux.
