Google continually improves their Chrome browser. Here is good news for all Google Chrome users regarding audio. The latest release from the Canary branch of Chrome features a new useful option - the ability to mute the audio of a specific tab. At this moment, this option is experimental and can be turned on with the flags editor. Let's see how to turn on and try this feature.
First, you need to install the Canary build of Google Chrome. You can get it here. Install it as usual and run it.
Now follows the steps below.
- Type the following text in the address bar:
chrome://flags/#enable-tab-audio-muting
This will open the flags page directly with the new audio muting feature.
- Click the Enable link under the option. It will change its text to Disable.
- Restart Google Chrome. You can also use the Relaunch button which will appear at the bottom of the browser.
That's it. You will be able to test the tab muting in action. Open some YouTube video in a tab and you will be able to mute it using a special icon on the right side of the tab:
Here is how it looks when you mute the tab:
I hope to see the tab muting feature in the stable channel of Google Chrome soon. I hope other browsers also follow suit and add this highly useful feature.

As they say there … these features may disappear some time … this one just did it :) Can’t find it in my Chrome Version 37.0.2062.124 m
One should consider the fact that the page above states that this feature only works for the Canary build of Chrome — what you’re running is the latest STABLE version of Chrome, hence why it says ‘Chrome Version 37.0.2062.124 m’ instead of ‘Chrome Version 37.0.2062.124-canary’ or something similar. You probably skipped a few lines, mate!
Nope :)
