It is possible to turn on the experimental link preview feature in Firefox starting in version 142. It allows users to view a summary of a webpage before clicking on a link. This feature enhances browsing efficiency by providing quick insights into link content without opening a new tab. There are AI tools included to analyze the linked content, and summary overview is one of such options. The AI model runs locally.
Advertisеment
You can activate the preview using one of three methods. First of all, you can right-click a link and select "Preview Link" from the context menu. Alternatively, you can hover over a link while holding down the Shift key. Finally, pressing and holding the left mouse button on a link for more than one second will do the trick.
The preview displays a brief summary of the page’s content. It may also highlight key points using an AI engine. The AI runs locally on the user's device and does not send data to external servers. This feature is optional and does not affect browsing performance when disabled.
In Firefox 142, the feature is enabled only for users with en-US, en-CA, en-GB, or en-AU locales who are running Firefox on systems with more than 3 GB of RAM. It will be gradually rolled out to additional users. Users in other regions or with lower system specifications can enable it manually. Here's how.
Enable Link Preview in Firefox
- Launch Firefox and click in the address bar.
- Type about:config and press Enter.
- Click the Accept the Risk and Continue button to access the configuration interface.
- In the search box, enter browser.ml.linkPreview.enabled.
- Locate the eponymous preference in the results list and double-click it to change its value from false to true.
- Now, restart Firefox to ensure the feature initializes properly.
That's it! Once enabled, you can use any of the methods to open a link preview.
