How to check if your PC supports Bluetooth 4.0

Very often users ask us how to find if their PC supports Bluetooth 4.0. Bluetooth 4.0 adds Bluetooth Smart / Bluetooth Low Energy standard in addition to the Classic Bluetooth specification, so it is a significant improvement in prolonging battery life of devices. The batteries in Bluetooth low energy devices will last several times longer than their classic Bluetooth counterparts. Windows does not make it clear if your hardware supports Bluetooth 4.0. Today we will see the fastest way to determine it.

The fastest way to find it is to inspect the Device Manager and look for the Bluetooth LE Enumerator device. Let's see the steps for it in Windows 10.

  1. Right click the Start button to open its context menu (Power User menu, also known as Win+X menu). Select the item called "Device Manager".
  2. In Device Manager, expand the Bluetooth node.
  3. If your PC supports Bluetooth 4.0, you will see the item named Bluetooth LE Enumerator. See the image above.

That's it! This means that your PC hardware and installed driver supports Bluetooth 4.0 / Low Energy. Note that only Windows 8 and Windows 10 support it, Windows 7 does not.

  1. I have Windows 7. I am aware of Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 pluggable adapters. If I use one of these, would that then enable my Windows 7 to be compatible with Bluetooth LE enumerator devices?

  2. Yes I think so. Bluetooth 4.0 support is like USB 3.0. If your pluggable USB adapter has a LE driver for Windows 7, it should work without issues. But I don’t know any adapter that works.
