How to Backup Sticky Notes in Windows 10

Sticky Notes is a built-in app in Windows 10 which can place nice colorful notes right on your Desktop. Today, we will see how to easily backup and restore Sticky Notes in Windows 10 in order to transfer them it to another Windows 10 PC or restore them after you reinstall the operating system.
Starting with Windows 10 version 1607 "Anniversary Update", the classic version of Sticky Notes which was included since Windows 7, was replaced with a Universal (UWP) app. The new app has tight integration with Cortana and Search.

The new app stores your sticky notes data in a database file named plum.sqlite. When you need to back it up, you have to create a copy of the plum.sqlite file.

How to Backup Sticky Notes in Windows 10

  1. Close the Sticky Notes app.
  2. Copy and paste the following path in File Explorer's address bar:
    %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState

  3. Press Enter to open the target folder.
  4. Copy and paste the plum.sqlite file to another location. It can be a folder on your hard drive or a folder on an external backup device.

If you re-installed Windows 10, you will be able to retrieve your sticky notes quickly using the backup file you created. You can put this file to its original folder location or transfer it to a new user profile.

Before pasting the plum.sqlite file, ensure that you don't have the Sticky Notes app running. You can check this quickly with Task Manager and end its process there.

  1. The “Sticky Notes” application that’s provided with Windows 10 is all well and good, but there’s another alternative. “Stickies” is a freeware application that does FAR more than the very basic Sticky Notes applet. It can be found at http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk, as well as a wide variety of skins that can be used to customize the appearance of the sticky notes. The note data is stored in a file in the user profile, which can be backed up by simply copying the data file whenever and wherever desired. I have it loaded as part of my Startup, and it’s a major go-to application for quick notes that are temporary or too trivial to store in OneNote. It’s WELL worth looking into. //S//
