According to recent news, Microsoft is set to release an optional and free upgrade of Windows 11 for HoloLens 2 headsets in the first half of this year. Customers who prefer to remain on Windows 10 can continue using their mixed reality headset without any issues. But with the forthcoming Windows 11 update, HoloLens 2 headsets will receive additional security features as well as a preview of the newest developer tools.
Although it may seem like a significant development, the upgrade to Windows 11 for HoloLens is not a major one compared to its impact on regular PCs.
According to a blog post by Robin Seiler, the corporate vice president of Windows and devices at Microsoft, the focus of this HoloLens version of Windows 11 is on security and ongoing platform support. This is particularly beneficial for enterprise users, as they can anticipate monthly security updates and better app performance.
Although the upgrade to Windows 11 on HoloLens 2 is optional, customers may choose to update in order to benefit from the new developer tools available. With this upgrade, HoloLens 2 will now support Microsoft's Edge WebView 2 runtime, enabling developers to integrate web technologies into their HoloLens apps.
As the release of Windows 11 on HoloLens 2 headsets approaches, Microsoft is incorporating fresh features specifically tailored for frontline workers in its Dynamics 365 Guide app. These additions comprise enhanced 3D annotations, a restricted mode that will prevent unauthorized access to apps and highly sensitive data, and the capability to toggle video on or off before initiating a Teams call.
