Microsoft released the first update to the Canary Channel of their newest Chromium-based Microsoft Edge app. Starting in build 124, the app allows showing or hiding the favorites bar on tabs, featuring an individual option for the new tab page.
Unfortunately, there is no change log available for the Canary Channel of the browser. But you can easily spot a new option after installing build 124 of the browser. It is available in both Settings and the Bookmarks bar context menu.
To Hide or Show Favorites Bar in Microsoft Edge Chromium,
- Open the Edge app. You must be running the latest Canary build.
- If you have the Bookmarks bar visible, right-click it.
- In the context menu, go to the Show favorites bar submenu.
- Select either Always, Never, or Only on new tabs.
Alternatively, you can configure this option in the browser settings.
Show or Hide the Favorites Bar in Edge Settings
- Open the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click on the menu button with 3 dots.
- Select Settings from the menu.
- Navigate to the Appearance section.
- There, set the Show Favorites bar option to Always, Never, or Only on new tabs.
You are done.
It is worth mentioning that the ability to get rid of the Favorites bar completely, i.e. to hide it on empty tabs, is new to Microsoft Edge. Chromium and Google Chrome continue to show the bookmarks bar on the new tab page even if you have the bookmarks bar disabled.
Microsoft has made available for download a number of pre-release Edge versions based on Chromium. At the moment of this writing, the browser is available in a Dev Channel and a Canary Channel.
Microsoft explains that the intention behind their move to the Chromium code base is to create better web compatibility for customers and less fragmentation for web developers. Microsoft has already made a number of contributions to the Chromium project, helping to port the project to Windows on ARM. The company promises to contribute more to the Chromium project.
The official preview builds of the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser are available for Windows 10 only. The 'Beta' Channel build is missing as of now, but its badge hints that it is coming soon.
