Google Calendar will no longer work on devices running Android 7.1 (Nougat) and older. The latest manifest version of the application has a new line, UnsupportedOperatingSystem__enabled. It contains a message that users need to update their OS to Android 8 (Oreo) or later to continue using the application.
The SpAndroid blog was the first to notice the change regarding the discontinuation of support for older versions of Android. The ApkMirror website later indirectly confirmed that by releasing a new version of Google Calendar with Android Oreo (8.0) as the minimum supported version.
The authors of TheSpAndroid speculate that Google may provide more information about this change in the coming weeks. They also shared their own experience of encountering an unsupported OS message upon launching the application, preventing them from accessing the main screen.
According to Google, the company is gradually phasing out support for older Android versions in order to address security concerns. Older versions of Android are more vulnerable to hacking and data loss. In fact, it was reported in early November that Google Chrome support for Android Nougat would also be discontinued. This starts with version 120, scheduled to be released in December.
