Google Chrome to support HDR videos on Windows 10

Google today announced that the Chrome browser will support HDR video on Windows 10. It will be a positive change for all Google Chrome users.

The official announcement says the following:

Looking forward, to support the next generation of video experiences, we've begun adding support for High Dynamic Range (HDR). This means you can get vibrant colors, darker blacks, and brighter whites from the latest HDR displays. HDR support is now available on Windows 10, and more platforms are coming soon. Also coming soon is the official release of VR on the web, and after enjoying the first immersive web experiments we’re looking forward to what sites do in the coming year.

HDR video removes the limitations of SDR video signals and comes with an ability to bring greater brightness and color to the picture by including extra information about the contents as part of the signal. HDR-capable devices, e.g. displays and TVs, can read that metadata to show a bright colorful image. The metadata can be used to show very bright and very dark areas simultaneously, so the image retains its natural contrast without appearing too dark or too whitened.

An HDR display has the capability to show a lot of shades between white and black, and can also show a greater variety of shades for other colors. This becomes a really great feature when you are watching videos related to nature or some color-rich scenes. If your device comes with an HDR display, Windows 10 is able to utilize it to show better colors.

It is worth mentioning that Windows 10 supports HDR videos natively. You might want to calibrate your display to make the OS show proper colors. The appropriate option can be found under in Settings under Apps -> Video playback. Refer to the following article:
