Recently, Microsoft has rolled out a new cumulative update for Windows 10. The patch with ID KB3194496 brings the build number up to version 14393.222. It has been reported by many users that the update failed to complete and rolled back to the previous build of Windows 10. If you are affected by this issue, here is a quick fix for you.
In the Settings app, the Windows Update history page shows the following:
The issue is caused by two tasks in the Task Scheduler, which need to be deleted to get the update installed. The tasks that appear to be failing the update are located in the Task Scheduler under Microsoft > XblGameSave > XblGameSaveTask and XblGameSaveTaskLogin.
To fix the issue, you need to do the following.
How to install the KB3194496 update (Windows 10 build 14393.222)
- Open Task Scheduler by typing it in the Start menu
- Navigate to Microsoft > XblGameSave
- Right click on both XblGameSaveTask and XblGameSaveTaskLogin and disable the tasks
- Close the Task Scheduler.
The mentioned tasks cannot be deleted from the Task Scheduler app itself. You need to delete them from the System32 folder and the registry once you disable them as described above.
- Navigate to \Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\XblGameSave
- Delete both files in the above folder:
- Open Registry Editor.
- Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\XblGameSave
Tip: see How to jump to the desired Registry key with one click.
- Right click on both XblGameSaveTask and XblGameSaveTaskLogin subkeys and delete them.
Now, you can try to install the KB3194496 update once again. Credits: via.

I did all the steps, but failed again.
I restarted after deleting these. and now I have the update.
Something is ***SEVERELY*** wrong when some dumba** game component for a game system we DON’T EVEN WANT in the first place should keep the system from updating. Microsoft should do everyone a favor and REMOVE their worthless gaming system in it’s entirety. If someone wants it there, THEN they can add it, but why should the rest of us suffer because of some gamers????
It looks like it installed but it didn’t. (you get the failed installation message after reboot)
I found the only way to get it installed was to do an upgrade that kept all apps, etc., and made sure it checked for updates before installing. Took a while but all is working fine now.
