Firefox 148, scheduled for release on February 24, introduces a new configuration parameter that enables users to completely disable all artificial intelligence related functionalities. The parameter named browser.preferences.aiControls appears on the about:config page. After activation, a dedicated section becomes available on the settings page where users may disable all AI features at once or selectively enable individual capabilities.

Users can manage specific AI related features including language translation, text recognition in images and scanned PDF documents, tab grouping recommendations and labels, summary generation for link previews, and chatbot interface access. Each function supports three operational states: enabled, disabled, or blocked. Blocking a feature removes locally installed AI models and hides corresponding interface elements.
Split View Mode Enabled in Firefox 149
Nightly builds of Firefox, which will form the foundation for Firefox 149 on March 24, now activate Split View mode by default. This mode allows users to view two tabs simultaneously within a single window. In Firefox 147, Split View remains disabled by default and requires manual activation through the about:config parameter browser.tabs.splitView.enabled. Following activation, a button labeled Add Split View appears in the context menu accessible via right clicking on tabs.
Clicking the Add Split View button divides the window into two distinct panes and opens a new tab in the right pane. When applied to a group of two tabs, both tabs open side by side immediately. Users may resize the pane size by dragging the divider bar with the mouse. During simultaneous viewing, the active tab receives a red border for clear visual identification.
