Starting in Firefox 141, you can enable AI-powered tab grouping to organize your tabs faster. It uses a local model (and doesn't leak your data anywhere), suggests group names and which tabs to include in the group. By default, this interesting feature is disabled. Firefox 141 introduces an experimental AI-powered tab grouping feature that uses a locally executed machine learning model to identify and suggest related open tabs based on their content.
The browser can automatically recommend which tabs to group together. It also suggest a descriptive name for the group. While this functionality is not enabled by default for all users, it can be activated manually through the browser’s advanced configuration settings.
Enable AI-powered tab grouping in Firefox
To activate AI-powered tab grouping in Firefox, follow these steps.
- Launch Firefox and navigate to the address bar.
- Type about:config and press Enter.
- Click the Accept the Risk and Continue button to access the configuration interface.
- In the search field, enter browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled.
- Locate the preference in the results list and double-click it to change its value from false to true.
- Now, restart Firefox to ensure the feature initializes properly.
That's it! Once enabled, you can use the tab grouping functionality by right-clicking a tab or dragging one tab onto another.
A “Suggest more of my tabs” button will appear. Click it to make the browser show recommended tabs for grouping based on content similarity.
Then, click Continue to make Firefox analyze your open tabs.
The AI will propose a name for the new group, and the list of tabs that fit that group.
