Firefox 74 is available, here are the changes in this release

Mozilla is releasing Firefox 74, a new stable browser version. Here are the key changes in this release.

Firefox is a popular web browser with its own rendering engine, which is very rare in the Chromium-based browser world. Since 2017, Firefox has the Quantum engine which comes with a refined user interface, codenamed "Photon". The browser doesn't include support for XUL-based add-ons any more, so all of the classic add-ons are deprecated and incompatible. See Must have add-ons for Firefox Quantum.

Thanks to the changes made to the engine and the UI, the browser is amazingly fast. The user interface of Firefox became more responsive and it also starts up noticeably faster. The engine renders web pages much faster than it ever did in the Gecko era.

What's new in Firefox 74

TLS support

Firefox 74 is the first browser version that drops support for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1. It will no longer establish connections to web sites that use these outdated standards.

In Firefox, this means that the minimum TLS version allowable by default is TLS 1.2. This has been executed in code by setting security.tls.version.min=3, a preference indicating the minimum TLS version supported. Previously, this value was set to 1. If you’re connecting to sites that support TLS 1.2 and up, you shouldn’t notice any connection errors caused by TLS version mismatches.

Data import

Firefox users can now import profile data from Edge Chromium on Windows and Mac

Extensions

The add-ons manager allows removing extensions sideloaded by third-party apps.

Other changes

  • A New Container Tab menu can now be opened with right click on the new tab button. In addition, an option to require a container tab to be selected when the new tab button is clicked is available.
  • On Windows, Ctrl+I can now be used to open the Page Info window instead of opening the Bookmarks sidebar. Ctrl+B still opens the Bookmarks sidebar.
  • DNS Over HTTPS (DoH) enabled to all in the US, including NextDNS support.

The official release notes are not available as of now. If they include anything important, I will update this post.
