Firefox 143 released, adds Copilot integration, website pinning to taskbar, and much more

Mozilla has released Firefox 143. Updates are also available for extended-support branches: Firefox 140.3.0 and Firefox 115.28.0. The Firefox 144 branch has entered the beta testing phase, with a scheduled release on October 14. Firefox 143 introduces significant usability enhancements, including tab pinning via drag-and-drop, live camera previews during permission requests, and improved Private Browsing file management. What's new in Firefox 143

User Interface Enhancements

Tab pinning

Users can now pin tabs as permanent shortcuts by dragging them to the beginning of the tab bar. This eliminates the need to access the context menu. To unpin a tab, users may simply drag the shortcut back into the main tab area.

Camera permissions

When a website requests access to a camera, Firefox displays a live preview of the camera feed within the permission dialog. This feature assists users in confirming the correct camera device is selected, particularly on systems with multiple cameras.

Automatic file removal downloaded in Private Browsing

A new setting in Preferences allows users to configure automatic deletion of files downloaded during Private Browsing sessions. Upon closing the Private Browsing window, Firefox prompts users to either delete or retain these files.

Event notification in the URL bar

Firefox now displays important dates and events—such as Mother’s Day—in the address bar. This functionality is currently enabled for users in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy.

Privacy and Security Improvements

Enhanced Fingerprinting Protection

Fingerprinting Protection has been enhanced. Firefox now returns consistent, non-identifying values for browser parameters that could otherwise serve as tracking vectors. For example, locally installed non-system fonts are no longer exposed in the list of available fonts.

Resolved security vulnerabilities

Firefox 143 resolves 16 security vulnerabilities. Eight of these stem from memory-related issues—including buffer overflows and use-after-free errors. Exploitation of these flaws could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code upon visiting specially crafted web pages.

Media and Web Standards Support

Support for xHE-AAC

Firefox adds support for xHE-AAC (Extended High-Efficiency AAC, ISO/IEC 23003-3) audio playback. This codec enables high-quality streaming on platforms such as Netflix. Support is limited to Windows 11 22H2+, macOS, and Android 9+.

CSS  and tags

The <input type="color" /> element now accepts extended color notation, including functional RGB syntax (e.g., rgb(200 200 200)), in addition to traditional hexadecimal formats.

Removed restrictions that prevented setting CSS properties "display" for HTML elements "<details>".  A new CSS pseudo-element, ::details-content, enables developers to customize the styling of collapsible content regions.

Developer Tools Updates

  • Web Developer Tools now offer a setting to disable the grouping of similar messages in the Web Console.
  • The Debugger no longer opens new tabs when toggling between plain-text and formatted source code views.
  • The CSS Grid layout engine has been updated to align more precisely with the W3C specification. This ensures accurate rendering of grids that use percentage-based row sizing or elements with defined aspect ratios.

Platform-Specific Features

  • On Windows, Firefox now supports launching websites as pinned web applications directly from the taskbar. Additionally, full compatibility with the Windows UI Automation API improves accessibility for users with disabilities.
  • On Android, Firefox introduces a dedicated toggle to enable DNS over HTTPS (DoH). The download management interface has also been simplified for improved usability.

Integrated Services

  • The context menu now includes an option to search selected images using Google Lens.
  • The address bar now displays contextual financial information, including real-time stock prices and securities data, when relevant URLs are detected.
  • Microsoft Copilot has been integrated into the list of AI chatbots supported in the sidebar.
