Firefox 101 is out with the classic download prompt by default

A new version of Mozilla Firefox is here. The only alternative browser these days, it brings back the classic download prompt. Now the user can again choose what to do with a downloaded file. Previously, it was set to save it directly to the 'Downloads' folder. Besides, it comes with security fixes, with no drastic changes to other areas.

What's new in Firefox 101

The release is notable for reverting one of the most controversial change in the browser. The download prompt is back, and it is a welcome change. Now you can specify if you want to save the file, or open it with the associated app.

The return of the classic download prompt

Firefox 101 introduced a couple of options related to the file downloads behavior. In Settings, you will find them under the list of known file types. New options allows you to change the default action for “other files” that are missing in the list.

General improvements

  • You can now set a custom action to any unknown MIME type once you download a file of that type.
  • You can now use multiple microphones during video conferencing and to switch between them. This only works for services that support multiple mics.
  • Security fixes: 10 of the high impact, 4 moderate, and 1 low. The full list is here.

You can download Firefox 100 from the official website. Alternatively, you can grab the full (offline) installer from Mozilla's file archive.

In addition to the stable release, Firefox 91.10.0 ESR is also available for download. The extended support release targets enterprises and users who prefer to avoid drastic changes and unpredictable behaviors that can affect their workflow.

Finally, Firefox 102 is now in the Beta and Developer channels, with Firefox 103 on the Nightly channel.

  1. It will be the last update for me on v91. I’ll jump on v102 next month. New ESR comes out then.

For those of you who don’t know, there’s a Release Calendar to keep track of releases from Firefox.

    You can find it here:

  2. Firefox v102 is now out on Mozilla’s FTP. I just installed ESR. About 1 year until a new one ;)
