Microsoft has updated its Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10, confirming that all enrollment methods now require a Microsoft Account. This includes the $30 one-time purchase option, which previously led some users to believe an account was unnecessary. But the latter license now covers up to 10 devices..

A single ESU license purchased for $30 USD applies to up to ten devices linked to the same Microsoft Account. The update simplifies application for users managing multiple systems. The do not need to buy a separate license per device.
The company clarified through a support document that every enrollment path, whether via direct payment, spending 1000 Microsoft Reward points, or syncing PC settings to OneDrive, requires Microsoft account authentication.
"All enrollment options provide extended security updates through October 13, 2026. You will need to sign into your Microsoft account in order to enroll in ESU. You’ll be given these options to choose from when you enroll in the ESU program. You can use your existing ESU license on up to 10 devices."
Enrollment began in July and is being deployed in phases. Users running the latest Windows 10 updates can access the option by navigating to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. A new "Enroll now" button will appear if eligibility criteria are met.

Those using local accounts must sign into a Microsoft Account during enrollment. Users not currently syncing settings may choose to enable Windows Backup, redeem rewards, or complete a one-time purchase to activate ESU.
Extended security updates will remain available until October 13, 2026, regardless of the selected enrollment method. Devices must be manually enrolled, but the same license covers all eligible systems under one account.
The rollout continues gradually, so availability may vary by region and device configuration.
