How to Enable or Disable Tab Hover Cards in Microsoft Edge Chromium

As you may already know, Chromium-based Microsoft Edge includes tab tooltips known as 'Tab Hover Cards'. These new tooltips are not enabled by default in the stable version of the browser, so today we will see how to enable tab hover cards in Microsoft Edge Chromium.

The Tab Hover Cards feature was first introduced in Google Chrome 78, and then subsequently appeared in Edge Chromium, starting in Canary build 78.0.253.0.

This is how the tab tooltips look in the current stable version of Microsoft Edge, which is 79.0.309.71 as of this writing.

And here is how the tooltips look with the Tab Hover Cards feature enabled.

Similarly to Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge comes with a number of useful options which are experimental. They are not supposed to be used by regular users but enthusiasts and testers can easily turn them on. These experimental features can significantly improve the user experience of the browser by enabling additional functionality. To enable or disable an experimental feature, you can use hidden options called 'flags'.

To Enable Tab Hover Cards in Microsoft Edge,

  1. Open Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. Enter edge://flags/#tab-hover-cards into the address bar and press the Enter key.
  3. Set the Tab Hover Cards flag to Enabled.
  4. Restart the browser once prompted.

You are done.

You can also experiment with other available options and try setting the flag it to

  • Enabled
  • Enabled B
  • Enabled C

Enabled B and Enabled C options change the timeout for a Tab Hover Card tooltip to appear after hovering the pointer over the tab.

You are done.

To Disable Tab Hover Cards in Microsoft Edge,

  1. Enter edge://flags/#tab-hover-cards into the address bar and press the Enter key.
  2. Set the Tab Hover Cards flag to Disabled.
  3. Restart the browser once prompted.

That's it!

Microsoft recently released the first stable version of Microsoft Edge Chromium to the public. Surprisingly, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7, which has recently reached its end of support. Check out Windows Versions Supported by Microsoft Edge Chromium.

Interested users can download MSI installers for deployment and customization.

For pre-release versions, Microsoft is currently using three channels to deliver updates to Edge Insiders. The Canary channel receives updates daily (except Saturday and Sunday), the Dev channel is getting updates weekly, and the Beta channel is updated every 6 weeks. Microsoft is going to support Edge Chromium on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, alongside macOS, Linux (coming in the future) and mobile apps on iOS and Android.
