How to Enable or Disable Scrollable Tabstrip in Microsoft Edge

A few days ago Winaero reported that the Chromium developers enabled the "Scrollable tabstrip" feature in Chrome Canary, that allows scrolling the tab row in Google Chrome. Quickly after that, Microsoft Edge offers the same option. Here is how to activate it.

Currently, when you open multiple tabs, their width will reduce until you can only see the icon. Further opening tabs will make the icon disappear too. This no longer an issue in Chrome and Edge, both Canary. Thanks to a new feature, after opening certain number of tabs, you can scroll through them with the mouse wheel. See the following video:

The feature is a work-in-progress. It Chrome, and can be enabled or disabled with the flag chrome://flags#scrollable-tabstrip.

In Microsoft Edge, you need to do the following. Before proceeding, ensure that you are running Edge 88.0.670.0 or above. It is in Canary as of now.

To Enable or Disable Scrollable Tabstrip in Microsoft Edge,

  1. Close Microsoft Edge if you have it open.
  2. Right-click on its shortcut, e.g. in or Desktop, or on other shortcut you have.
  3. Select Properties from the right-click context menu.
  4. In Properties, modify the Target text field by adding the following argument:  --enable-features=ScrollableTabStrip. Perpend it with a space, e.g. first add a space after msedge.exe. You will get something like this.
  5. Launch the browser with the modified shortcut.

You are done.

It is not known yet if Microsoft will re-add Chrome's flag, or remove or replace this feature in Edge.

Note: Microsoft has started delivering Microsoft Edge to users of Windows via Windows Update. The update is provisioned for users of Windows 10 version 1803 and above, and replaces the classic Edge app once installed. The browser, when delivered with KB4559309, makes it impossible to uninstall it from Settings. Check out the following workaround: Uninstall Microsoft Edge If Uninstall Button is Grayed Out
