You can enable or disable Automatic HTTPS for URLs in Microsoft Edge. The browser now includes a special option to control this behavior. There is a new flag that adds the Automatically switch to more secure connections with Automatic HTTPS setting, so you can turn it on/off or further configure it under Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
Starting in Microsoft Edge 92, the browser will open websites via HTTPS when no protocol specified by the user, i.e. in case when the URL is entered partially. For example, if you type winaero.com into the address bar, it will first load https://winaero.com and not http://winaero.com, as it works in the actual stable Edge version.
This change was first introduced in Chrome 90. Since both browsers share the underlying Chromium engine, it is not surprising to see the same behavior in Edge. Microsoft Edge will prioritize HTTPS requests, assuming that most sites these days are available via the secure and encrypted connection. However, unlike Google, which forced the new behavior for all users on all supported platforms in Chrome 90, Microsoft made this feature optional. At the moment of this writing, the appropriate option is already available in Microsoft Edge Canary.
This post will show you how to enable or and configure Automatic HTTPS for typed URLs in the Chromium based Microsoft Edge.
Enable or Disable Automatic HTTPS in Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Type
edge://flags/#edge-automatic-httpsin the address bar, and hit the Enter key. - Select Disabled from thedrop-down menu next to the Automatic HTTPS option to disable this feature. Note that as of now the Default value is same as Disabled.
- Select Enabled to turn on Automatic HTTPS and add the related Settings options.
- Restart the browser.
Done! You can now close the Experiments tab in Edge.
Once you enabled the Automatic HTTPS feature, you can configure it as follows.
Turn On or Off Automatic HTTPS for URLs in Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click on the menu button (Alt+F) button with 3 dots, and select Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services on the left.
- On the right, turn on (default) or off the Automatically switch to more secure connections with Automatic HTTPS option for what you want under the Security section.
Done! You can now close the Settings tab.

Automatic https is not what i want. How can i go to http simply and easily? I’m so not a tech so plz any help should be in baby steps!

After following the instructions, I disabled automatic https, then restarted browser. The section you show above in Settings>Privacy, search, and services>automatically switch to …https is not in my version of Edge, and the browser still switches my http:// address back to https://, even after I disabled it via Edge settings. I’m trying to reach my router and I can’t via any other browser or settings unless I use an older PC with IE, which did allow me to bypass the insecure site warning.
