Microsoft is continuously improving the built-in password manager in the Edge browser. It can detect password leaks, show password strength, sync your data across devices, suggest hard-to-crack passwords, etc. With a recent update in the Canary channel, Microsoft Edge is one step closer to being a fully-fledged password manager that satisfies the needs of an average consumer. Users now can manually add passwords to store them within a Microsoft account.
The same capability recently appeared in Google Chrome, and now Microsoft follows suit. Modern browsers display a "save password" prompt whenever the user enters a login and password.
Add Password in Microsoft Edge
Now you can open Settings > Profile > Passwords and click the Add Password button to manually save your credetntials.
Edge will ask you to enter the URL, username, and password. Next time you visit the website, the browser will offer you to sign in automatically using the data you have previously saved. Neat.
As of now, the ability to add logins and passwords manually is available only in Microsoft Edge Canary, version 99.0.1124.0. Note that the capability is a part of a controlled feature rollout, which means only a few Edge Canary users can currently access it. As usual, it will take a few weeks for Microsoft to polish the new feature and bring it to more users in other channels.
This week, Microsoft plans to ship Edge 97 with several minor changes. After installing Edge 97, which is currently available in the Beta channel, users will be able to use their current profile to sign into websites when multiple work or school accounts are available on a device. Also, Edge will get support for Microsoft Endpoint Data Loss Prevention on macOS, citations, and digitally signed PDF files support.
