Dropbox drops unlimited premium plan due to crypto scams

Dropbox is discontinuing unlimited storage on its business-focused Advanced plan. It has been discovered that some users were utilizing the plan for resource-intensive activities like cryptocurrency mining. As a result, the 3-license Advanced plan will now offer a total of 15 TB of pooled storage, with each additional license adding 5 TB of disk space.

Additionally, starting September 18 for new users (November 1 for current users), Dropbox will introduce additional storage options priced at $10 per month for 1 TB when billed monthly and $8 when billed annually.

Starting November 1, existing users will be gradually transitioned to the modified Advanced plan, with a minimum 30-day notice provided. The majority of Advanced plan customers, who use less than 35 TB of storage, will be able to retain their current storage amount at the time of migration, along with an additional 5 TB of pooled storage for up to five years, without a price increase.

A minority of users who exceed 35 TB of storage will be offered a similar deal, but for a duration of one year. The maximum storage capacity for all versions of the extended plan will be 1000 TB.

Dropbox has observed an increase in users consuming significantly more storage space compared to their actual business needs. They "consume thousands of times more storage than our genuine business customers, which risks creating an unreliable experience for all of our customers.", the company noted. This includes activities such as reselling storage or sharing pooled storage among multiple individuals for personal use.
