How to Disable Pocket in Firefox 57

Firefox 57 Icon Logo

The recently released Firefox 57 comes with a newer version of the Pocket service. There are traces of Pocket still embedded inside the Firefox browser. Pocket is a third party service which allows you to send an opened page to your Pocket account and read it later from another device such as a tablet or another PC. If you are not happy to see a third party service integrated in your Firefox 57, here is how to remove all the traces of Pocket.

Firefox 57 is a huge step forward for Mozilla. The browser comes with a new user interface, codenamed "Photon", and features a new engine "Quantum". It was a difficult move for developers, because with this release, the browser drops support for XUL-based add-ons completely! All of the classic add-ons are deprecated and incompatible, and only a few have moved to the new WebExtensions API. Some of the legacy add-ons have modern replacements or alternatives. Unfortunately, there are plenty of useful add-ons which have no modern analogs.

The Quantum engine is all about parallel page rendering and processing. It is built with a multi-process architecture for both CSS and HTML processing, which makes it more reliable and faster.

If you have no use for the Pocket service or if you do not trust this service, you can disable it completely in the Firefox browser.

To disable Pocket in Firefox 57, do the following.

  1. Open a new tab and enter the following text in the address bar:
    about:config

Confirm that you will be careful if a warning message appears for you.

  2. Enter the following text in the search box:
    extensions.pocket.enabled

    See the following screenshot:

  3. You will see the parameter extensions.pocket.enabled. Double-click on it to set it to false.

You are done.

Alternatively, you can remove pocket highlights from the New Tab page in Firefox. This will keep the feature enabled, but the section Recommended by Pocket will be hidden.

Remove Recommended by Pocket from New Tab Page

  1. Open a new tab to see the new tab page.
  2. On the top right, you'll see the tiny gear icon. It opens the page's options. Click it.
  3. Uncheck (turn off) the Recommended by Pocket item.

That's it.

  1. Thanks for all those useful tips about Firefox. Maybe you should consider doing a post summarizing what you suggest as a good configuration for a whole set of options? You could make different sets of settings based on some aspects like a privacy oriented set with no third-party service, one with what you consider a reasonable trade off for useful features, etc.

That way, it would be easy for your readers to just grab a set of settings and apply them based on their needs.

  2. This does not work at all for me. I have tried EVERY suggestion I have found on the web and POCKET still shows up in Firefox Developer 58.

  3. Am clicking the checkbox, but the blue check remains. In other words: FF’s or Pocket’s control mechanism literally ignores user input. And these unhelpful pocket-recommendations remain.
    Please help…. thoughts?
