Microsoft is known for making new colorful icons for Windows 10. The new icons were expected to be used in a special edition of the OS for dual-screen devices, Windows 10X. However, Microsoft has made icons available across the entire Windows 10 family. Starting today, the new icons are coming to non-Insiders with app updates from the Store.
The new icons have been initially found by enthusiasts, but recently Microsoft officially introduced them. With new icons, Microsoft pursuits a goal to develop a flexible and open design system to span a range of contexts, to signal innovation and change while maintaining familiarity for customers.
Also, Microsoft is trying to resolve Windows icon inconsistency, as it includes many icons from previous Windows versions, including Windows XP, Windows 2000, and even Windows 95. Certain icons, while being modern, just don't fit the design style of the OS.
Windows Insiders have received their first set of new icons with Windows 10 Build 19569, featuring the new icons for Calculator, Mail & Calendar, Alarms & Clock, Voice Recorder, Groove Music, and Movies & TV.
The first wave of apps that are getting the new icons outside of the Insider Preview rings includes Mail and Calendar.
We can expect more icons for first-party apps to come in the near future.
Also, Microsoft is making similar colorful icons for their modern Office suite, Office 365, available by subscription and as an online app.
All the known icons are below.

Looks good, except I don’t use the Microsoft store, and never will. I will move to Linux before using that store.
What I want in Windows 10 is an option to show a full/flat thumbnail image on the folders, as it was in XP.
These pretty new icons are all well and good, but I STILL want to be able to change the color of the icon label behind the icon text like Macs used to be able to do before I was forced to switch to Windows because Adobe discontinued the Mac versions of the programs that I use for work. Being able to change the icon label color made it easier to see the icon text when using a photo or drawing as a desktop background, and allowed the use of icon label colors as a form of project management.
Where are these “Colorful Icons” in MS Store?
I did a search for them in MS Store an they are nowhere to be found.
Thanks,
Matt
you don’t install these icons,
it just means that apps from the store will get the update with the icons. so if you update Mail app (or windows will update it for you) the icon will change for that specific app
