After killing Reading List in the Edge Legacy (Microsoft stopped supporting the browser in March 2021), Microsoft puts a lot of effort into improving the Collections feature. Collections allow you to store various web pages, notes, images, pins from Pinterest, and other content in customizable sets, which you can also export to other apps. Microsoft Edge syncs all your collections across devices, including the Edge browser on iOS and Android. Recent updates to Edge Canary have brought another quality-of-life improvement for those frequently using Collection for research and study.
You can now add different types of citations to each link in a collection. The feature is available in preview in the Canary channel only, which means you can encounter some bugs or rough surfaces that need more polish. Microsoft Edge currently supports the following citation formats: APA 7, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, and MLA. After enabling the feature and adding the needed details about authors, websites, publication dates, and other information, users can copy generated citations to paste into a document.
How to Show citations in Collections in Microsoft Edge
- Create a collection in Microsoft Edge, then add a web page to it.
- Next, click the three-dots button in the upper-right corner of the Collections flyout and select Show citations.
- Select the format you need.
- Now, click the citation icon next to the shortcut.
- Populate all the required fields with necessary data, then click Save.
According to the official Microsoft Edge Feature Roadmap, citations should arrive in Edge 95.
"Starting with Microsoft Edge version 95, we have improved the Collections experience, especially for students and researchers. Collections will start supporting citations and reading lists."
For now, the feature is available only in Edge 96 in the Canary channel as a part of the controlled feature rollout.
