How to Change Profile Picture in Microsoft Edge Chromium

The modern Microsoft Edge browser supports multiple profiles for a single user account. For each profile you have in Edge you can assign an unique image. This can be done for both local and Microsoft accounts in the browser.

Microsoft Edge is now a Chromium-based browser with a number of exclusive features like Read Aloud and services tied to Microsoft instead of Google. The browser has already received a few updates, with support for ARM64 devices in Edge Stable 80. Also, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7, which has recently reached its end of support. Check out Windows Versions Supported by Microsoft Edge Chromium and Edge Chromium latest roadmap. Finally, interested users can download MSI installers for deployment and customization.

Profiles in Microsoft Edge

Similarly to user accounts in Windows 10, Microsoft Edge supports profiles on a browser level. This allows you to have more than one default profile, and even pick one to be used for opening links from running apps. Each Microsoft Edge profile comes with its individual browsing history, favorites, options, and extensions. Profiles are useful when you want to differentiate and isolate your activities, like social networks, banking, blogging, etc.

You can use a Microsoft Account to create a new profile in Microsoft Edge, or you can create a local profile instead. When you sign in to a profile with a Microsoft account, Microsoft Edge will be able to sync your browsing history, favorites, saved passwords, etc, across all your devices which have Edge running under the same account. The local account's data remains only available on the current device.

By default, Edge works with a single profile. It is usually named "Default". You can add a few more. Profiles are stored under the following directories:

  • Microsoft Edge Stable: %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data.
  • Microsoft Edge Beta: %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge Beta\User Data.
  • Microsoft Edge Dev: %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge Dev\User Data.
  • Microsoft Edge Canary: %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge SxS\User Data.

For each browser profile you can set an individual display picture. Firstly, we will see how it can be done for a local profile.

Change Edge Profile Picture When Signed in with Microsoft Account

  1. Open Microsoft Edge, and switch to the required profile.
  2. Click on the menu button with three dots, or press Alt+F.
  3. Click on the Settings item.
  4. Go to in Settings > Profiles.
  5. Click on the three dots button next to the profile name, and select Edit from the menu.
  6. Click on the Change picture link.
  7. A new tab will open to the edit picture online page for your Microsoft account. The change you will made there will apply to both Microsoft Edge profile and your Windows 10 user profile.

The changes you made there will eventually sync across all your Windows 10 devices that you have signed in to with the current Microsoft Account, and will also update the profile picture in Microsoft Edge.

You want to apply the picture right now, sign out from Microsoft Edge, then sign out from Windows 10. After you sign in back, the image will be automatically set. Do not check enable the Clear favorites, history, passwords, and other browsing data from this device option when signing out from Edge.

That's it.

  1. This doesn’t work for me. On Step 7, I don’t get an Edit Picture page. Instead, it takes me to My Account.

  2. ¿Can I add custom image profiles to use them?
In Chrome, in the folder avatars, that is in the same parent folder than the profiles, I included my selected pictures, changing the name with one of the default pictures, so when I select this image, I get the image I want to be showed. But I dont find a similar folder in Edge.
