exFAT is the Microsoft-developed file system that’s used by Windows for various types of storage devices, including SD Cards and USB flash drives. According to the official announcement, it is important for Microsoft to provide the Linux community with a working exFAT Linux kernel driver. They also promise to open Microsoft’s technical specification for exFAT and to make it publicly available. This should facilitate development of interoperable implementations.

Microsoft also support the eventual inclusion of a Linux kernel with exFAT support in a future revision of the Open Invention Network’s Linux System Definition, where, once accepted, the code will benefit from the defensive patent commitments of OIN’s 3040+ members and licensees.
