Microsoft is continuing their aggressive push to install Windows 10 on Windows 8 and Windows 7 PCs. Another round of updates has started - a new update, KB3150513, has been released to "help" the user switch to Windows 10 immediately.
The patch comes with the following description:
This update provides updated configuration and definitions for compatibility diagnostics performed on the system. The updated definitions will improve accuracy and help enable Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system. This update will be offered only if KB2977759, KB2952664, or KB2976978 is installed on Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows 7 RTM.
Microsoft avoids the string "Windows 10" in the text, so the average user will not get any idea what the update does.
It looks like the Redmond giant is not going to stop until July 2016 after which the free upgrade offer will end. The company's extremely aggressive push for Windows 10 has become quite infamous. No other version in Windows history has been pushed by them with so much desperation.
If you are not familiar with the whole saga of aggressive upgrades, here are a few links for you to see how desperate Microsoft is to force Windows 10 on you:
- Windows 10 upgrade offer now has no Cancel option.
- Windows 10 might be silently downloaded on your computer.
- It might directly show you the prompt to install it as it is being aggressively pushed via deceptively described updates.
- Windows 10 will become a recommended update.
- Microsoft continues to push Windows 10 aggressively.
As someone who decided to stay with Windows 7, I uninstalled all telemetry and tracking updates and disabled Windows Update completely. I understand that disabling Windows Update is an extremely insecure solution, but it is better than having to keep up with what updates I need to allow, which ones to hide, uninstall, tweak or disable to avoid the forced Windows 10 upgrade.
Due to my freedom of choice having taken away by Microsoft, I have learned to do all my daily computer tasks in Linux as much as possible. I switched to Arch Linux some time ago and I can say that I am very happy with my decision.
If you already installed KB3150513, here are instructions to get rid of it. Paste the commands below into Notepad, save the file as a .BAT file and run it from an elevated command prompt:
wusa /uninstall /kb:3150513 /quiet /norestart wusa /uninstall /kb:2977759 /quiet /norestart wusa /uninstall /kb:2952664 /quiet /norestart wusa /uninstall /kb:2976978 /quiet /norestart
That's it.
