Sticky Notes is a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app which is bundled with Windows 10 starting in "Anniversary Update" and comes with a number of features which the classic desktop app didn't have. In our previous article, we saw how to backup its settings and restore them when required or transfer them to another PC or user account. Today, we will see how to backup and restore your notes.
With Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft discontinued the classic Desktop app "Sticky Notes". Now, its place is taken by a new app with the same name. The new app lets you create Cortana reminders from your notes. You can type a phone number and have it recognize it, and recognize URLs too which you can open in Edge. You can create check lists and use it with Windows Ink.
Note: If you don't like the Sticky Notes Store app, you can get the good old classic Sticky Notes app. This is the page to get it: Old Classic Sticky Notes for Windows 10
For many users, the classic Desktop app is the more preferable option. It works faster, starts faster and has no Cortana integration.
If you prefer the modern app, you might be interested in creating a backup of your sticky notes. Thankfully, it is very easy to do, since they are stored in a single file.
To backup Sticky Notes in Windows 10, do the following.
- Close the Sticky Notes app. You can terminate it in Settings.
- Open the File Explorer app.
- Go to the folder %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState. You can paste this line to the address bar of File Explorer and hit the Enter key.
- There, you will see the file plum.sqlite. Select it.
- Right-click on the selected file and select "Copy" in the context menu, or press the Ctrl + C key sequence to copy the file.
- Paste it to some safe location.
That's it. You just created a backup copy of your sticky notes created with the modern Sticky Notes Store app. To restore them or move to another PC or user account, you need to place the plum.sqlite under the same folder.
