AMD processors are coming to 13-inch Surface Laptop 4

15-inch Surface Laptop 3 is the only computer from Microsoft that runs on AMD CPU. According to the recent report from WinFuture, Microsoft is about to end this exclusivity. In the upcoming Surface Laptop 4, the company will offer AMD configurations in both 13-inch and 15-inch form-factors. Users will be free to choose what CPU they want in both sizes.

Although many welcomed the switch from Intel to AMD in 15-inch Surface Laptop 3, the performance level and the battery life are mediocre at best compared to the Intel variant. AMD significantly improved its mobile CPUs in the fourth and fifth-generation Ryzen processors, so Microsoft is now confident enough to bring new CPUs from the “red team” to both 13-inch and 15-inch models. Unfortunately, do not expect the latest fifth-gen processors. WinFuture claims Microsoft will offer fourth-gen Ryzen 5 4680U and Ryzen 7 4980U. Those who want an Intel-based Surface will have to decide between Intel Core i5-1145G7 and Intel Core i7-1185G7. In other words, you better stick to other manufacturers if you want a laptop with fifth-gen Ryzen processors.

Besides the newer CPUs, Surface Laptop 4 will not offer much new. The device will maintain a 3:2 screen aspect ratio with 2256x1504 pixels in the 13-inch model and 2496x1664 in the 15-inch model. Although AMD processors are coming to the smaller variant, some perks remain exclusive to Intel. For example, a 32 GB RAM configuration will not be available for the AMD option, and the same for the 1 TB storage option. The most expensive Surface Laptop 4 variant with an AMD CPU will offer up to 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM.

As to design and other features, do not expect much besides the color refresh. According to rumors, Microsoft will introduce a new blue color option similar to that in Surface Laptop Go. The size, keyboard, trackpad, bezels, and port configuration will remain the same. Also, there will be no Thunderbolt support.
