Adobe Flash could be used to play videos and animated content. These days, there are a large number of users who disable Adobe Flash. They do so because of performance and battery life reasons as well as because security vulnerabilities are discovered in the Flash plugin.
A security update for Adobe Flash Player was released on Patch Tuesday. The update includes a fix that resolves a critical security vulnerability CVE-2020-9746. Exploitation of CVE-2020-9746 requires an attacker to insert malicious strings in an HTTP response that is by default delivered over TLS/SSL.
However, not all Edge versions received this update. Microsoft Edge Canary, which hosts Chromium 88-based builds, didn't receive it.
If you open the edge://components page, if you'll see Adobe Flash Player - Version: 0.0.0.0. Edge no longer uses it. Even if you click on "Check for updates", you will end up with an error.
Meanwhile, the Dev, Beta and Stable channels still retain integration with the Flash Player component.
If Microsoft didn't change its plan regarding the Flash removal, it will be discontinued in the Edge Beta on December 7th, 2020, and in the Stable version on January 21st, 2021.
Adobe will stop distributing and updating Flash Player after December 31, 2020.
Adobe Flash is now the only NPAPI plugin that Firefox supports. Starting in version 84, Mozilla will remove all NPAPI code from the browser which is required to run Flash. Chromium-based browsers will also drop Flash support starting with Chromium version 88 which is coming on January 2021.
