How to Add MSCONFIG.EXE System Configuration Tool to Control Panel in Windows 10
MSConfig.exe, known as the System Configuration Tool, is an essential tool that allows managing the startup process of the Windows operating system. You can add it to the Control Panel if you want. This adds extra value to the classic Control Panel tool, which Microsoft continues to remove features from in flavor of the Settings app.
MSConfig.exe was bundled with many Windows version released prior to Windows 10. It was first introduced in Windows 98. With in Windows XP, it had finally landed in the NT Family of Windows, and now it is available in Windows 10.
Starting in Windows 8, Microsoft had surprisingly moved the startup apps feature from the MSConfig tool to the Task Manager. So, the modern MSConfig app allows the user to
- customize some of the bootloader options,
- to perform a clean boot,
- to disable or enable Windows services,
- to launch some of the built-in tools.
You can MSConfig in the Administrative tools folder. Additionally, you can add it to the classic Control Panel.

To Add MSCONFIG System Configuration to Control Panel in Windows 10,
- Download the following Registry files (in a ZIP archive): Download Registry Files
- Extract its contents to any folder. You can place the files directly to the Desktop.
- Unblock the files.
- Double click on the
Add Msconfig To Control Panel.reg
file to merge it. - Now, open the Control Panel and go to System and Security. It now contains the MSConfig entry.
You are done.
Use the included Remove Msconfig To Control Panel.reg
file to remove the applet from the Control Panel.
